August Meeting

August 6, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm UTC-6

Scene & Sequel

John Foxjohn believes the key to successful writing is learning. No matter the level of the writer, there is always something that can be learned. Different ideas and different approaches to teaching can foster new ideas or new ways of doing something with the writer.
Ten years ago Foxjohn introduced a writing class he titled Scene & Sequel. Since that time several classes have popped up with the same name, but they aren’t the same class, although some are similar, and they aren’t taught by Foxjohn, whom many consider a master instructor.
The mention of Scene & Sequel to most conjures up the term GMC—goal, motivation, and conflict, and they believe that is what Foxjohn’s class is about. However, Foxjohn’s Scene & Sequel is different. He takes a bare bones look at something he thinks a lot of writers fly right over—the basics of a manuscript—the scene, hence the name.

The sequel part of the class deals with ways like goals to enhance the scene, but again, Foxjohn’s approach to even this is different than some others.
His goal is to teach, but also to get the writer to think: new ideas, techniques, and ways of doing things can and do promote creativity.

Presenter: John Foxjohn

Best-selling author John Foxjohn epitomizes the phrase “been there—done that.” Born and raised in the rural East Texas town of Nacogdoches, he quit high school and joined the Army at seventeen: Viet Nam veteran, Army Airborne Ranger, policeman and homicide detective, retired teacher and coach, now he is a multi-published author.

Foxjohn’s accolades as a writer are piling up. His name has appeared on every major best-selling list in the country, and he has earned awards in writing from Romance Writers of America, Mystery Writers of America, and others. Foxjohn is the only writer who has been asked to present a program at the Mystery Writers of America national convention and the Romance Writers of America national convention.

Foxjohn has been voted author of the year and mentor of the year.

Besides all of this, Foxjohn was also a nominee for the Mystery Writers of America’s vaunted Edgar Award.

Foxjohn lives in Lufkin, Texas, with his wife. When he’s not writing, teaching writing classes, or speaking to different writing groups and conferences, Foxjohn loves to spend time square dancing, working in his rose garden, or in his garage doing woodwork.
